Canada is poised to create a joint venture to catch crab

Representatives of the fishing industry in Canada are ready to create a joint venture for production of snow crab in the Barents Sea. Adviser on agriculture of the Russian embassy in Ottawa Sergey line said to ITAR -TASS. This issue, along with the other in fisheries will be discussed at the end of May 2014 during the visit of Canadian business in Russia.

Snow crab / scientific name – «snow crab» / moved to the Barents Sea from the Pacific Ocean near Kamchatka in 1960 , then was acclimatized in the 2000s, became the object of commercial fishing .Here is caught about 4 tonnes of crab per year. Now, scientists are concerned about the excessive reproduction of this species of crustaceans in the waters. Meanwhile, Canada supplies to world markets about half of the products of this crab and modern technology can offer its catch and processing, as well as help in promoting products on international markets.

Different types of crab are common in warm waters in many areas of the oceans at depths up to 250 meters . In the world production of crabs crustaceans accounting for about 20 percent . In the year of their catch from 350 to 400 thousand tons , including in the Pacific Ocean – 250-270 thousand tons in the Atlantic – 115-140 thousand tons. Most valuable commercial species – the «royal» / Kamchatka / crab that lives in the northern Pacific , mainly in the Sea of Okhotsk , off the west coast of Kamchatka, Sakhalin , in the Tatar Strait , the Bering Sea, off Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska .However, in recent years, snow crab is gaining popularity because of its cold hardiness , thin shell and more tender meat than the traditional king crab. Snow crab also cheaper than «royal».

In addition, the Canadian business intends to discuss unclaimed quotas for fish and other seafood in the North Atlantic. Canada is prepared to increase shrimp exports – is a major part of Canadian exports to the Russian fishing industry. By the end of 2013 the Canadian shrimp exports amounted to $70 million. However Rosselkhoznadzor reminded Strukov previously had a claim to several suppliers of shrimp due to the discovery of bacteria in the , then they have lost their licenses for exports to Russia. «As we were told , all the comments of the supervisory authority of Russia were eliminated and now awaits the arrival of the Canadian side of the Russian special inspection. When she was able to come, given the position of the Government of Canada, which interrupted all bilateral contacts with Russia – this is a big issue», – said the agency interlocutor.

Strokov also said that Russia, in turn, through the fishing industry exports salmon to Canada. «For example, in 2013 in this regard has been very successful for us. In the waters of the Canadian province of British Columbia has come very little salmon to spawn , and it was a lot of in Kamchatka» – adviser said. Russia shipped salmon to Canada at $60 million last year.
