Russia increases military infrastructure in the Arctic

Russian Northern Fleet deploys military infrastructure on the borders of Russia, in the areas of most islands and archipelagos of the Arctic Ocean. This information was confirmed by an official representative of the team of the Northern Fleet Andrey Korablev.

 

Recently in St. Petersburg was a round table at which Russia’s national interests in the Arctic were discussed. It was stated that the plan to create a unified system of monitoring both surface and underwater environment of the Arctic Ocean.

 

Earlier, at a meeting of the Security Council, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the strengthening of the Russian borders in the Arctic, he stressed the need to protect each area of the continental shelf of the Russian Arctic, rich with hydrocarbon.

 

In the near future it is planned to continue work on the development of new or neglected areas of the Arctic. Thus, in particular, a research vessel will be sent to the archipelago of Franz Josef Land and Severnaya Zemlya to Wrangel Island and the New Siberian Islands.

 

According to officials, these actions are due not only to military operations, but also provide the basis for strong economic activity in the Russian Arctic, as well as the necessary development of the Northern Sea Route as a national transport route.
